Guitar Fun
After a multi-year hiatus, I've started taking guitar lessons again. I had taken lessons off-and-on throughout the years but being unable to go to the gym due to the pandemic led me to take it up again. My daughter has also started playing bass guitar and I can't tell you the joy that I have when we're learning songs together. It's just so much fun.
I'm currently taking lessons from Matthew Smith. We meet up once a week for an hour and, I gotta say, I'm having a blast. I encourage you to check him out if you're looking to start or continue your guitar journey. He offers both in-person and remote lessons.
One of the things I've been working on recently are the Pentatonic Scale forms and noodling those over backing tracks on YouTube. Initially I struggled with visualizing how the five different forms related to one another. I had a sheet that showed them individually with connecting lines in between but it just wasn't clicking. This week I decided to build my own reference diagram and wanted to share it in case it would benefit someone else.
I broke my diagram into two sections; the top showing how the five forms relate to one another with clear boundaries around each and the bottom showing the same five forms but without the boundaries. This has helped me get my head around how these forms play off each other. You can download a PDF version of the diagram here.
My Gear
I'm a huge Metallica fan and in the early 2000s I acquired an ESP KH-2 Relic (#11 of 100) and a ESP KH-3. I kick myself almost daily for letting these two gems go. You can't find Relics much at all nowadays and when you do they're $6k+. KH-3s are also incredibly hard to come by and command a premium.
I'm currently playing the following:
- Fender Mustang GTX100
- Epiphone Les Paul Standard PlusTop Pro
- ESP KH-Ouija
- ESP KH White Zombie
- ESP KH-602 Purple Sparkle
The Epiphone is super nice. It has that sultry sound you'd expect from the Epiphone Les Paul line. Will I ever be good enough to have a real Gibson Les Paul? I doubt it but that doesn't stop me from wanting one. Regardless, I'm very happy with the Epiphone model. I take it to each of my lessons - mainly because I don't really want the ESPs to leave the house.
The ESPs, on the other hand, are a different animal altogether. They're brighter and I feel as though the neck is faster although I'm not fast. The KH-Ouija is from the first run in the ESP reissue after they were sued by Mattel. I don't play it a lot because I want it to stay perfect.
